A Family Affair

Paul Harfield is running the London Landmarks Half Marathon to raise money for Police Children’s Fund and thank the charity for supporting his nephew.

The London Landmarks Half Marathon takes place on 6 April 2025, weaving around Westminster and the City of London – Paul is one of five runners who will be raising money for Police Children’s Fund.

Paul’s sister was medically retired from the police several years ago and has struggled to get back into permanent employment. She didn’t realise her young son was eligible for support from Police Children’s Fund until a friend told her about it.

Paul said: “She made an application and the person she was talking to said, ‘Yeah, you’ve absolutely got something there’ and they gave her son some financial assistance that has helped buy bits and pieces.”

When Paul heard the Fund was looking for runners, he put his name forward straight away. It will be a family affair, as Paul’s daughter Robyn is also running for Police Children’s Fund and his niece is taking part in the event too.

Paul ran the London Marathon in 2019 and loved the experience. He said: “The crowd on the day, it pulls you round. You can really get caught up in it. The support was great, all the way round – there wasn’t a patch that was quiet. You do hit a wall, but you get to a point where you think, ‘There’s no way I’m not finishing this.”

He continued: “This is my first big race since the pandemic, so I’ve just started picking up some training. I run my own business so I’m fairly busy but I’ve started with 5k runs and I’m doing three or four runs a week. I’m planning on amping up my distance over the next few weeks. I’m not looking at completing it in a certain time, really, as I just want to run with Robyn.

“I’m looking forward to testing myself again and having fun and enjoying the atmosphere, as well as raising money for the charity.”
