One of our Avon & Somerset beneficiaries in receipt of higher education assistance has very generously shared a few words with us, showing how Police Children’s Fund has helped him thrive. Here is Alex’s story:
“Growing up, my dad was always my hero. I remember one day vividly, we were in a McDonald’s and a fight broke out between a group of teenagers the same age as me. Even though he was off duty and had one hand in a plaster cast, my dad stepped in alone and protected everyone. That moment stuck with me. It wasn’t just about bravery, it was about courage, instinct and doing the right thing without hesitation.
“But being a hero comes at a cost. Over the years, my dad has struggled with PTSD and physical injuries from his service. Seeing the toll it took on him emotionally and physically was difficult, especially as a child. It changed our family life in ways I didn’t always understand until I got older.
“This year, I started my degree in Sports Science at Loughborough University, a path inspired by the love of sport my dad and I shared when I was young. Whether it was kicking a ball around the park or racing our bikes, those moments helped create the man I am today. Now I’m thriving in my studies, in my social life and in my sport. I’m currently training for the Ironman World Championships this September.
“None of this would have been possible without the support of the Police Children’s Fund. Their financial help lifted a huge weight off my shoulders. It allowed me to be a part of the university clubs I love and helped me focus on what really matters: growing, learning, and chasing big dreams.
“I’m incredibly grateful to everyone who supports this charity. You’ve not only helped me survive this year, but you’ve also allowed me to make the most of this amazing opportunity. Thank you for investing in the children of those who serve”.
