Meet the Runner

As we celebrate Trustees’ Week, meet Helen Darby. Helen will be lacing up her running shoes and training hard for the London Landmarks Half Marathon (LLHM) in April 2026.

Helen’s commitment highlights the vital role our trustees play in leading our charity. Their dedication ensures that children of deceased or medically retired police officers continue to receive the support they need to learn, grow and thrive.

The event, taking place on Sunday 12 April 2026, sees runners weave through some of London’s most iconic sights and Helen is ready to take on the challenge to raise vital funds for the charity she proudly helps to lead.

Helen, who has been a trustee for more than three years, is deeply passionate about supporting police families.

“Being a trustee allows me to see first-hand the difference the Fund makes to children and young people across our policing family,” Helen explained. “Running the LLHM is another way I can contribute; to raise awareness, raise funds and help ensure that support continues.”

Balancing her busy life, Helen admits training hasn’t been without challenges. A member of a local running club and no stranger to half marathons, she’s easing back into training after a knee injury

“I’ll start properly after Christmas, there’s nothing like a looming deadline to get you motivated! I’m not aiming for a personal best, just to finish strong and raise as much as I can.”

Helen will be cheered across the finish line by her eight-year-old daughter and hopes to meet other runners representing the Police Children’s Fund on race day. For Helen, the real reward is knowing her efforts will help families who need it most.

“A lot of people don’t realise just how far-reaching the Fund’s support is,” she said. “It’s not only about financial help, it’s about giving children opportunities, building confidence, and helping them achieve their goals.”

“It’s not always easy asking for donations, especially after Christmas,” Helen added. “But every pound makes a difference. I’m so proud to be part of something that helps families rebuild their futures.”
